Cristiano Ronaldo said he always calls himself the best because that is what he believes, as he picked up the Portuguese player of the year award.
The Real Madrid player’s confidence has never been in doubt as is his competitive nature which helps him compete with Lionel Messi for the top gongs year after year.
“I always say that I am the best because I believe it and I show it on the pitch,” he explained, after scoring four goals against Girona on Sunday, at the Quinas de Oura awards gala held by the Portuguese football federation.
“It is a great time at the moment that I want to share with my teammates. It is incredible on an individual and collective level, it has been a historic year for Real Madrid. Five trophies in a year, a fifth Ballon d’Or and a second FIFA award.”
Ronaldo was voted the best player of 2017 by footballers, coaches, fans and a jury led by Luis Figo. He was accompanied at the ceremony by his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez and his agent Jorge Mendes.
He has won the best player award in the three years that it has existed and beat Bernardo Silva, of Manchester City, and Sporting goalkeeper, Rui Patricio, into second and third.
